Earthling or Martian?
It’s been something of a stressful week on the technology front, culminating in a significant part of a day spent trying to sort out an email issue. Only in the last of a string of phone calls did I discover some really important information for the problem presenting but also for dealing with future challenges.
When my frustration had subsided I was able to recognise my part in the problem. I was speaking ‘Martian’ whilst our support was speaking ‘Earthling’, or vice versa and it doesn’t really matter which was which – we were failing to connect around the problem.
I hadn’t been clear and specific in my questions. I hadn’t considered their world and what they might need to help me fully in their response.
It was, and is, a valuable reminder, in even the most mundane of moments, to connect with the other, not short circuit in the interests of speed or an assumption they’ll get what’s in our heads, and ensure we’re ‘speaking’ the same language.
What are you speaking when it matters, remembering it matters all the time?
