Being all in…
Leaders ‘being all in’ is often cited as a must have for success when embarking on a formal change programme. Yet isn’t this wholehearted commitment a quality of our leadership that we should be expressing 24/7, whatever the situation, and what might that look like? How about…
- Mindfully bringing our attention to every situation, being fully present in every interaction…listening deeply and with empathy to others’ views and ideas
- Being open to new thinking and actively seeking this out by extending our circle of conversation and consulting beyond our usual connections or those we know as advocates to include the rebels and nay-sayers
- Taking thoughtful risks, experimenting, learning if we fail and cultivating a climate where others feel safe to do the same
- Being clear about what we believe in and stand for and being prepared to show our vulnerability
- Keeping working on our self-awareness and the feedback that can help us improve our impact with others
- Continually checking in with ourselves around our openness to change and to what we’re prepared to let go of so that change can come. And ensuring we communicate and exemplify our openness with a passion that inspires others
- Ensuring our focus is on people and enabling them to be their best so we can achieve together
None of these are new concepts for great leadership, nor is the list exhaustive, yet if we want to ‘be all in’, to bring the leadership that’s needed right now, we may need to turn up the dial on the intensity and consistency of our practice.
