Delivering on now and the future
When the dust settles on the challenge to American democracy will the outgoing President reflect on his actions and his legacy? Evidence suggests probably not. But there’s a powerful reminder for all leaders, at whatever level, in whatever institution, in this situation.
If we’re privileged enough to be leaders, we have to take great care of two interdependent factors…the now and the future.
The now is about how we dispense our responsibilities with grace, honesty and humility. How we care for the people we lead – their wellbeing and their growth and development. The way we think and how we express those thoughts in our words and actions so that we are contributing positively rather than seeding the negative and destructive.
In taking great care of the future, we are paying attention to the legacy we’re creating. Not in a self-interested, ‘how I’ll be remembered’ way, instead in the creation of an organisation and culture that will sustain a positive experience for all stakeholders and a continuing contribution to creating a better world for all.
Taking stock of our leadership at this start of a new year might just be a worthwhile exercise to help us make the adjustments that will make the difference to how we deliver on our now and future objectives.
