Growth is an ever present in our current discourse – in organisations as well as nationally and globally – centred entirely (or so it seems) on the financial economy. In business it’s about pulling the levers enabling one resource or constraining another to grow the numbers and bottom line in service of an exclusive group of people.
This is not to say that profit doesn’t matter, it does.
But what if we took a different approach – focusing first on human growth, on creating the conditions where people thrive and fulfil their potential? We could call this growth the principle of human flourishing.
Beyond our physical growth we humans, rather like plants, are ‘programmed’ to grow towards the light. Through formal learning and accumulated experience, we come to the light of knowing and understanding more.
Our emotional growth, towards emotional maturity, takes us closer to the light of right relationship. And beyond this there’s soul connection, the growth to discover the light of our unique purpose in our existence. Often called our North Star, living in the light of our purpose transforms – brings deep meaning and positive impact to how we are and what we do.
When, as leaders we set and pursue a higher purpose for the organisation, one that prioritises the greater good, alongside a culture that gives people a sense of belonging, and meaning in their work, magical growth happens.
People feel deeply connected to each other and the purpose. Collaboration replaces silos and competition. Creativity rises. Best efforts flow. And the numbers start to take care of themselves.
