You’ll probably have heard the phrase ‘vacuum of vision’ being used over recent weeks. I came across it in a brilliant perspective piece from Richard Huntington in Management Today on the state of not just our current political leadership but also within our businesses. I think it’s worth a read.
Of course, a deficit of vision may not be true everywhere, in every case, in every business. You may be reading this and thinking not on my patch.
And yet…
Are we really stretching ourselves far enough towards better?
Working as a coach it is my role to challenge people out of their comfort zone, to encourage the disruption of patterns and habits so they can uncover the potential not yet realised.
I know, from personal experience, how uncomfortable the zone beyond can be. Climbing out of the rut we may not even be aware of and stepping deep into unfamiliar territory takes courage and faith.
The rewards can be many. For some a shedding of the ‘musts’ and ‘shoulds’ that inhibit so our true responsibilities can be clarified and new, more stretching and progressive goals pursued. For others it is a release of creative power, the opportunity to think and enact the previously unimagined – a vision that can make a real difference to us, our team, and organisation.
Game changing possibilities won’t become reality by doing the same thing in the same way, or hiding behind ‘the business will never go for it’ assumptions. Are you ready for the challenge?
