Getting beyond the unreal

Start Reading

Daily we take positions on the information we receive. Where there are gaps we might explore further. Often it is easier to fill with assumption.

The source of the information also has an impact – do we trust it or not? Is it real or not?

Once we’ve crossed these not insignificant tests off we come to a higher bar and the need for a higher ‘truth’.

The past few weeks of ‘he said/she said/he said’ headlines have brought a few things, for me, into the leadership spotlight.

Perspective. Much of what we hear, are told, that comes our way, whether in our professional or personal sphere, has passed through someone else’s filters. And then it encounters ours and the possibility for further distortion. Cultivating an ability to view information from multiple perspectives is vital.

Context is often lacking or shared to present the storyteller in a light that’s more flattering than fair representation. Context clarifies when we seek the experience of multiple sources and synthesise those views.

Candour is essential to ensuring we get real, raw data not just the sanitised or good news only versions. Fostering a culture that encourages and appreciates candour can shift the dial on the quality of information we receive.

And then we come to heart. Here’s our compass for navigating well all that comes our way and defining what’s right and true. Our heart is uniquely able to discern the right thing, to fuel the compassion that ensures right timing for our actions, and to ignite the courage that carries us through the tough stuff.

If we truly want to get to the heart of what matters with our leadership bringing our heart into service is essential. How heart-full is your leadership?
