Diplomacy is key at every level of relationship

Start Reading

We know relationship can be tough as we navigate the many idiosyncrasies of the human condition. We can find ourselves ‘at odds’ with another person, another group or team, another organisation for any number of reasons and this can lead to a hunkering down, a sense of moral outrage or injustice, the blame game and so much more. We can become blinkered in our perspective or righteous in our attitude.

Whilst ‘diplomacy’ is most usually associated with nation states and pathways to easing difficult, complex and highly volatile situations, it can also have a place in our own more local relationships. Relationships are usually quite hard to navigate especially when years of challenges, hurts or perceived injustices have become crystallised. Sometimes the actual involvement of a third party, or at the least, the adoption of a third-party mindset can help us to see what matters and what doesn’t. It can also help connect us with a larger picture or a more significant set of values and ideals.

It can help us aspire to something altogether more productive, heart-warming and progressive. Adopting a ‘diplomatic’ mindset may require us to be prepared to seemingly sacrifice our view of what is ‘right’ or ‘true’ and aim for a higher ‘right’, a higher truth. It may ask us to let go of any parochial sense of ‘right’ or just for a higher goal and outcome.

Where are you facing conflict in your own relationships – personal and professional – where a more diplomacy-based approach could unlock real treasure?
