Our state of becoming

Start Reading

As human beings we are constantly in the process of becoming. With the advance of each moment in time we are changing – physically, mentally, and emotionally. What might be missing though is how conscious we are of these changes.

Physically (and biologically) our body is doing its thing. How aware, though, are we of our mental shifts courtesy of new information and stimuli coming in, of the expansion or narrowing of our thinking? Are we paying attention to the ebb and flow, sea changes, of our emotions such that we can manage them well in any interaction?

Often our becoming is a state of positive growth but how can we really know unless we are giving it our intentional attention. What if we just let things roll and then awaken, somewhere along the line, to a version of ourself that is less appealing and less effective?

If we lead others this is especially problematic. If we aren’t attuned to who we are becoming the impact we have on others may be unhelpful and the standards we set of a lesser quality than needed.

Building self-awareness is key. This isn’t about self-absorption, rather about being the best version of our self for us and for those we lead.

Being clear on our purpose. Having a sense of the growth we want to achieve (in human terms rather than promotions). Staying open to new ideas and perspectives. Leaning into learning opportunities. Getting more skilled at recognising and managing our emotions. All of these will help. As will a consistent practice of self-reflection and paying attention to the feedback we get from others.

Who are you becoming, and how?
