Spirit and matter: refining action in our world

It’s still not widely acceptable to speak of spirituality or philosophy in a business or organisational context despite the fact that of course it exists because each one of us holds their own ‘philosophy’ and perspective on the meaning of ‘Life’ in the big ‘L’ sense.

Reading a very small amount recently about the very inspiring Dag Hammarskjöld a former UN Secretary General who died prematurely whilst in service of the UN, I was struck by one of many quotes from his personal diaries: ‘In our age, the road to holiness necessarily passes through the world of action.

This speaks profoundly of the need for spirituality (holiness) to be an intrinsic part of any action (matter) that we engage in. Sadly so much of our way of being is focused directly on the concrete, material world of action without opening ourselves to connecting with the higher, deeper information and qualities emanating from a conscious and inquiring relationship with our own spirituality or, if you prefer, philosophy of Life. It’s like going from 2D to 3D or from analogue to digital. The quality of our experience takes on a multidimensionality that’s full of riches.

Imagine the outflow of riches that would follow if we were to open ourselves to this new level of quality in our actions.
